To familiarise students with the specifics of health needs and the principles of health care of older persons. To enable them to apply the principles of specific nursing care for elderly persons.

1. to clarify basic concepts in geriatrics and gerontology and the basic characteristics of demographic, biological, psychological and social ageing
2. distinguish between physiological and pathological changes in old age
3. identify the most common health problems in old age and ways of solving them
4. to implement planned health care models for older people
5. to implement measures for the protection and prevention of illness and pain
6. develop positive attitudes towards old age and older people
